let me be nothing

"If anyone is to come after me, he is to deny himself, take up his cross and follow me" --Mark 8:34

Am i willing to say "Lord, take my life" even when he calls me, not to great glory and sacrifice, but simply to be content to be nothing?

Pastor shared on Sunday about Mother Teresa. It is said of her, "She allowed herself to be nothing, so God could make her anything."

I am always struck by the Wesley Covenantal Prayer--I could say with gusto: "let me do whatever you call, go wherever you want me to go, to the ends of the earth", but it takes so much more courage to say "let me be employed by thee, or laid aside for thee'. Laid aside??

But I pray again tonight with a humble heart:

I am no longer my own, but thine.
Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,
exalted for thee or brought low for thee.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.
And now, O glorious and blessed God,

thou art mine, and I am thine.

So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
let it be ratified in heaven.
